Weird Tales, Volume 1, Number 4, June, 1923: The Unique Magazine

This is where it began. The June 1923 issue of Weird Tales captures a magazine in its raw, formative state, before it would become the legendary pulp that launched H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and countless other voices into the genre fiction canon. The issue pulses with early weird fiction: Paul Ellsworth Triem's "The Evening Wolves" opens with Colonel Knight, a man fleeing the remnants of his criminal past, cornered in dark alleys and turning to the mysterious Ah Wing. Edgar Allan Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" anchors the collection with genre-defining brilliance, while stories like "The Phantom Wolfhound," "The Voice in the Fog," and "The Invisible Terror" push into supernatural territory with varying degrees of elegance. There's pulpy fun here, rough edges, and genuine chills. For readers who want to hold the origin point of modern fantasy and horror in their hands, this artifact from 1923 offers something no later, polished issue can: the beginning.
