Weird Tales, Volume 1, Number 1, March 1923: The Unique Magazine

This is the issue that started it all. The March 1923 debut of Weird Tales introduced the world to a magazine that would define modern fantasy and supernatural horror, launching the careers of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard while establishing "weird fiction" as its own literary territory. These early tales blend the eerie with the fantastic, from ghostly encounters to unsettling experiments in the unknown. The publication occupied a unique niche: not mere horror, but the genuinely strange, where madness lurks at the edges of reality and ancient entities whisper from beyond human comprehension. While this issue predates the appearance of Lovecraft and Howard's most famous works, it captures the raw, vital beginning of a movement that reshaped genre fiction. For readers interested in the origins of modern fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and cosmic horror, this artifact serves as the opening salvo of a revolution in storytelling that continues to influence writers today.
