Wayward Winifred

Wayward Winifred is a luminous portrait of childhood loneliness transformed by imagination. Set in the enchanted Glen of the Dargle, the novel follows Winifred, an orphan living in a crumbling castle with her grandmother, whose days are filled with Irish folklore, secret companions, and a restless yearning for belonging. When an American visitor arrives, Winifred's solitary world opens outward, and she begins to question not only her mysterious parentage but the very nature of her uncanny friendships, including her enigmatic connection to the schoolmaster Niall. Sadlier weaves the misty magic of Celtic legend through the ordinary wonders of a child's eye, creating a world where ancient spirits walk beside real grief. The novel occupies a peculiar space between fairy tale and realism, its stakes less about adventure than about identity. For readers who loved The Secret Garden or Irish folklore collections, Wayward Winifred offers a quieter, stranger kind of enchantment.
