Wanderings of French Ed

In 1899, a young Frenchman named Edward Cottret leaves his village with nothing but dreams of American fortune. What begins as a hopeful quest becomes a bruising education in isolation, language, and the harsh economics of survival in Worcester, Massachusetts. René paints immigrant life with unsentimental precision: the boarding houses, the grueling labor, the loneliness that gnaws at a man far from everything he knows. Edward finds an anchor in Benjamin Oresky, a fellow outsider who becomes the brother he never had. But when he meets Nellie King, a magnetic actress in Chicago, Edward's careful self-control fractures. He's drawn into a double life, tangled between the woman who represents his new world and the girl he left behind. A devastating accident and crushing loss eventually force him to reckon with what he's been chasing, and why. This is not a triumphant immigrant success story but something rarer and more honest: a portrait of how ambition can blind us to the very things that make life worth returning to.
