
Virgin Soil Volume 1
Published in 1877, 'Virgin Soil' is Ivan Turgenev's last and longest novel, set in late nineteenth-century Russia. It follows a group of disillusioned young people who aim to instigate revolutionary change among the peasant and working classes, driven by a Populist cause. The narrative interweaves diverse characters, from aristocrats to idealists, revealing the emotional and societal tensions surrounding their ambitions. This volume includes the first half of the story, comprising Chapters 1-20.
