Verbrechen

Verbrechen, written by Maxim Gorky in the late 19th century, follows Wanja Kusmin, a simple and impoverished man who leaves his village in search of work in the city. He becomes involved with Jeremé Salakin, a lazy individual who survives through petty theft and begging. Their attempt to improve their dire circumstances leads to a horrific crime that ultimately exposes Wanja's naivety. This early narrative highlights the social conditions of the impoverished lower class in provincial Russia.
