A novella written in the late 19th century. The narrative intricately weaves through themes of tradition versus progress, emphasizing the impact of education on rural life. The opening of ''Vanhoillinen'' introduces us to Ylli Mäkelä, who has built a prosperous farmhouse on land that was once wilderness. He is depicted as a proud yet stubborn individual, resistant to the idea of a local school that his son-in-law, Erkki, supports. Ylli's interactions with both his family and the local pastor illustrate his conflict between maintaining traditional ways and navigating the encroaching modern values represented by new educational initiatives.
