Tuen, Slave and Empress

In 1850s China, amid the carnage of the Taiping Rebellion, a peasant girl is sold for silver. She will become the most powerful woman the empire has known in centuries. Tuen's journey from slave to Empress-dowager is one of history's most astonishing transformations. Gifted to the Emperor by a calculating official, she rises through beauty, intelligence, and ruthless will to become his second wife, then his closest advisor. When death claims the Emperor and his heir, she seizes the regency and rules China for thirty years behind a throne she cannot legally occupy. This 1898 novel, based on the life of the historical Empress Dowager Cixi, captures the brutality of civil war, the claustrophobia of court politics, and the singular ambition of a woman who refused to remain a commodity. Written when the Empress still ruled and the West trembled at her reputation, it offers a portrait of power wielded from the shadows by someone who understood that empire, like gender, is a performance.
