Travels in the Interior of Africa
Published in 1799, 'Travels in the Interior of Africa' by Mungo Park recounts his expedition to explore the Niger River. Commissioned by the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior of Africa, Park faced numerous challenges, including language barriers, imprisonment, and robbery, while navigating through uncharted territories. He became the first European to reach the Niger River at Ségou, traveling an additional 80 miles to Silla before returning to England. This work is notable for its detailed observations of African cultures and geography during a time of limited European knowledge about the continent.
