Time Payment
The year is somewhere in the future, and time travel has become a commodity you can buy. Slick Tennant is a gangster with the law closing in, and he's desperate. Dr. Richard Porter has built a machine that can send a person backward or forward through time - for a price. When Slick kidnaps the doctor and demands an escape route through the ages, he gets more than he bargained for. The real question isn't where he'll go, but what he'll find when he gets there - and whether the man who steps out of the machine will be the same one who stepped in. Jacobs writes with hard-boiled precision about a science fiction premise, letting the existential weight of time displacement settle into your bones. It's a story about what we owe to our past selves and whether any of us truly deserves a second chance.
