Thoughts on a Revelation

In an age of rising scientific skepticism, a Victorian philosopher confronts the most fundamental question: how can finite minds grasp the infinite? Jerram builds a rigorous case that human reason alone cannot penetrate divine mystery. True knowledge of God, he argues, must flow downward from beyond rather than upward from within. He establishes careful conditions for what constitutes authentic revelation: it must speak to human capacity without diminishing its divine source, address the context of its time, and remain faithful to its transcendent origin. The Bible, in Jerram's reading, stands as the primary testament to this impossible possibility. Yet he knows his readers will object, and he meets them honestly, defending revelation's continuing relevance for moral and spiritual life. This is nineteenth-century theology at its most intellectually serious, grappling with the ancient tension between faith and reason while confronting modern doubts about the possibility of the divine.
