They Were Different

They are rare. They are feared. In a world that punishes the extraordinary, having a gift means living in hiding. This 1950s science fiction novel follows telepaths - men and women born with minds that hear thoughts, that reach beyond the boundaries of ordinary human perception. They possess extraordinary mental abilities: telepathy, extrasensory perception, powers that could expand humanity's understanding of itself. Instead, they live as outlaws, hunted by laws written in fear, by a society that sees their minds as threats rather than miracles. What happens when the most human thing about you - the desire to be understood, to connect, to exist openly - becomes evidence of your danger? Kenney explores this tension with the anxious energy of mid-century SF, when the fear of 'the other' was filtered through Cold War paranoia. This is a novel about what it costs to be different in a world that worships normalcy, and whether understanding can ever triumph over fear.
