The Writing of the Short Story

A venerable guide to short story craft from the golden age of the form. Written in 1916 when the short story reigned supreme in American magazines, this instructional manual distills the principles that made O. Henry and his contemporaries legendary. Smith breaks narrative into its essential forces: character, incident, description, and mood. He argues that a story's power lies not in clever plotting but in the psychological current between creator and reader, the imagined life of another human being. Rather than a dry rulebook, this offers something rarer: a philosophy of storytelling from an era when writers still believed narrative was a spiritual act. For anyone curious about where modern creative writing pedagogy originated, or writers seeking the timeless fundamentals beneath today's trends, this century-old text holds surprising clarity.
