The Women Who Came in the Mayflower

1920

History - American, History - Other, Parenthood & Family Relations

In 1620, seventeen passengers crossed the Atlantic on a ship the size of a city bus. Four of them were adult women. This book recovers their names and their stories. Annie Russell Marble digs into the slim historical record, the wills, the letters, Bradford's history, to reconstruct what it meant to be a woman aboard the Mayflower: to give birth in a cramped hold during a Atlantic crossing that killed half the passengers, to bury a husband and children in the frozen earth of a foreign shore, to be the one who kept a household alive while the men built shelters they would not live to see finished. These were not passive passengers but active architects of colonial survival. Mary Brewster, who left a comfortable life in Leiden to die in the wilderness. Eleanor Billington, whose son was the first child born in New England. Susanna White, who arrived pregnant and widowed and went on to become the colony's most influential matriarch. Marble writes with early twentieth-century reverence, but her archival rigor gives these women texture beyond legend. For readers who suspect the Thanksgiving mythology obscures more than it reveals, this is a necessary corrective: the story of a nation told from the margins of the Mayflower's hold.
