The Women Who Came in the Mayflower

Before the republic had a name, a group of women crossed an ocean in a crowded ship and built something from nothing. This 1920 work recovers their names and their labor, reclaiming the women of the Mayflower from the margins of a history that too often forgot them. Annie Russell Marble traces the journeys of those who sailed in 1620, as well as the women who followed on the Ann and Fortune. She documents their passage through disease and brutal winter, their establishment of homes in the raw wilderness of Plymouth, and their essential work in sustaining families when nearly half the colony perished. Through careful research, Marble reconstructs the lives of figures like Elizabeth Tilley and Priscilla Mullins, showing how these women governed, healed, planted, and preserved when survival demanded everything. The book endures not as mere genealogy but as a corrective, proving that the foundations of early American life were laid by hands rarely allowed to hold the pen.
