Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

A man wakes in a strange future where a cult worships Demeter, the ancient goddess of harvest and hearth. Henry T. Joyce surfaces in a world of communal living and sacred sacrifice, captivated by Lydia, a priestess of the Demetrian order. But Lydia's devotion to her goddess may demand she surrender the one thing she cannot: her love for Chairo. As Henry navigates this surreal Greek-inspired landscape, he discovers a society built on collective principles where individual desire is always secondary to duty. The novel, published in 1908, predates the genre's golden age by decades, offering an eerie vision of a world where faith and fertility merge into something unsettling and total. This is speculative fiction before the term existed: a story about what happens when love must be sacrificed on an altar marked with wheat and stars.
