Evelyn Thorpe has just become the wife of a new minister, moving into the parsonage with every community eye upon her. But beneath the quiet domesticity of church life, she finds herself drowning in questions no one expects the parson's wife to ask. What is happiness if not the life she's been given? What is truth if it demands she become someone other than herself? Her husband Maurice is steadfast in his calling, but Evelyn feels the ground shifting beneath her faith, not in the doctrine itself, but in her ability to occupy the small box the world has built around her. As she grapples with the gap between the woman she is and the woman she's supposed to be, the novel quietly dismantles the sacred performance of piety, revealing the human hunger beneath the hymnals. This is a story about the loneliness ofperformed contentment, and the courage it takes to sit with doubt in a room full of certainty.
