The Well of Loneliness

Radclyffe Hall's seminal novel introduces us to Stephen Gordon, a woman born into an aristocratic English family who, from a young age, defies gender norms, preferring masculine pursuits and rejecting the expectations placed upon her. Named Stephen by parents who expected a son, her life unfolds as a poignant journey of self-discovery and societal alienation, marked by intense, often heartbreaking, romantic relationships with other women. As Stephen navigates a world that neither understands nor accepts her true nature, she grapples with the profound loneliness of being an "invert," a term of the era for homosexual individuals, seeking connection and a place where she can truly belong.
