The Weird of the Wentworths: A Tale of George Iv's Time, Vol. 1

Dun Edin Towers casts a long shadow. The Wentworths have borne the weight of their ancestor's sins for generations, cursed to watch tragedy ripple through their bloodline like ripples in dark water. In the Commonwealth period, the rebellious Sir Ralph abandons his cousin Augusta de Vere, the virtuous Abbess of St. Clements, choosing a path that seals their family's doom. Centuries later, the contemporary Ravensworths arrive naught seeking connection to this haunted lineage, yet Ellen Ravensworth, ambitious and striking, finds herself drawn into the Wentworths' orbit. What begins as fascination with aristocratic glimmers curdles into something darker: the creeping certainty that the past is never truly past, that some debts can only be paid in blood. Scotus weaves the Commonwealth's religious turmoil with the delicate nastiness of mid-Victorian social climbing, building toward a reckoning that proves the Wentworths' curse is no mere superstition but a machinery of tragedy grinding across generations.
