The Web of Time

Set in a small turn-of-the-century American town, this forgotten naturalist novel traces the unraveling of the Simmons family beneath the weight of addiction and poverty. Harvey Simmons is just a boy when he first understands the terror of his father's drinking, watching his mother Annie weave desperate threads of normalcy around a household shattered by violence and want. The novel opens with Annie waiting, heart hammering, for a husband who arrives only to bring chaos, her love tangled forever with fear. When tragedy strikes in a devastating moment of household disaster, the family must confront whether they will be destroyed or somehow, impossibly, find their way toward something like redemption. The prose carries the raw earnestness of early American realism, with all the uncomfortable intimacy of a family whose wounds are visible to everyone but themselves. This is a novel about the stubborn, painful persistence of love when it has every reason to flee, and the way time itself becomes a web in which the trapped and the free are bound together.
