The War Book of the German General Staff: Being "The Usages of War on Land" Issued by the Great General Staff of the German Army

This is not a novel. It is a weapon of words, issued by the Prussian General Staff in 1902 as official doctrine for how wars should be fought and won. Known in German as Kriegsbrauch im Landkriege, this manual was the actual instruction manual handed to German officers, laying out not just tactics but a philosophy: that war exists beyond morality, that enemy civilians are legitimate targets of military necessity, and that international law protecting the helpless amounts to nothing more than 'scraps of paper.' The text Coolly dissects the 'usages of war' with the precision of a legal document, cataloguing when civilians lose protection, what may be done to occupied territories, and how the harsh realities of armed conflict render humanitarian sentiment not merely irrelevant but dangerous. Reading it today feels like holding a historical time bomb, knowing this philosophy would shape the battles of World War I and echo through the century that followed. For historians, military scholars, and anyone seeking to understand how professional armies justify the unjustifiable, this volume remains essential and deeply uncomfortable.
