The Vow: A Novel

John Gaunt has accumulated a fortune substantial enough to command respect from all of London. What he cannot purchase is something far more precious: genuine human connection. On a dreary November day, we encounter this wealthy but hollow man, acutely aware that his success has purchased him nothing but isolation and the quiet desperation of a life without meaning. His solution is Lady Mildred Blythe, a woman of fading aristocracy whose financial circumstances leave her little choice but to accept his proposal. She marries him for security; he marries her in desperate hope that her presence might fill the aching void in his life. The arrangement is practical, even cold, but Gaunt's feelings run deeper than he dare admit. When illness strikes and Mildred's life hangs in the balance, Gaunt makes a sacred vow to God in a moment of anguish, a promise that will force him to reckon with what he truly values and whether redemption is possible for a man who has spent a lifetime building walls around his heart.
