The Village Notary: A Romance of Hungarian Life

In a village along the Theiss River, where the Hungarian flatlands stretch endless and monotonous, Mr. Jonas Tengeryi sits as notary, a man of stern judgment who has seen too much of human folly to expect much from humanity. His world collides with the irrepressible optimism of Balthasar Vandory, the village curate, whose faith in goodness stands as a quiet rebuke to Tengeryi's weary cynicism. Around them swirls the village of Tissaret, dominated by the powerful Rety family, where love and ambition intertwine with the machinery of local power. Eötvös, a Hungarian baron writing on the eve of his nation's great upheavals, offers neither sentimental portrait nor simple condemnation: instead, he constructs a luminous study of how individuals navigate the currents of provincial society, where justice bends, passions simmer, and the small dramas of village life carry weight enough to shape entire futures. This is a novel of manners and morals, of contrasting philosophies embodied in two men who must find their way forward in a world neither can fully control.
