The Time of Cold
An astronaut crash-lands on a frozen, hostile world where nothing survives without adaptation. In the alien landscape, she encounters a being unlike anything in her training: a liquid creature that shifts, flows, and hunts with terrifying grace. What begins as a confrontation between predator and prey evolves into something stranger and more unsettling: two alien intelligences, each seeing the other as monster, trapped together in a wasteland of ice and silence. Carlson's 1962 novella builds tension with glacial precision, exploring how survival strips away humanity and what, if anything, remains when the rules of civilization no longer apply. The ending refuses easy comfort, leaving readers with the queasy realization that understanding and survival might be mutually exclusive.
