The Thing in the Attic

The Thing in the Attic

James Blish

Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

On the world of Tellura, the surface is Hell. The Giants who created humanity deemed the ground evil, so they built their children high in the air and in the sunlight, far from the cursed earth below. All is governed by the Book of Laws, written by the departing Giants, who promised to return from the stars. Honath the Pursemaker is a heretic. He has dared to doubt, and for this crime he and his fellow doubters are cast into the Pit. But Hell is not what they expected. The ground is not scorched. The monsters do not devour. And when they finally see them, huge and terrible against the alien sky, Honath understands that everything he believed was wrong. Everything he disbelieved was true. Blish's 1954 novella inverts the creation story in ways that still sting: what if faith was the heresy, and the heretics were the only ones brave enough to walk on honest ground? A compact, bitter, luminous fable about what we sacrifice when we mistake inherited stories for truth.
