The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser: A Romantic Novel

Aubrey Beardsley's only completed novel is itself a kind of illustrated fever dream, black ink bleeding across pages like wine staining white silk. Based on the medieval German legend of the knight Tannhäuser, the book depicts a man who descends into the Venusberg, the underground realm of the goddess of love, and loses himself in sensuality so total it becomes a kind of religion. Venus herself is neither fully temptress nor fully lover but something more unsettling: an appetite given form, a desire that consumes what it touches. Beardsley wrote the book in 1898, dying at twenty-five before he could finish it, and the incompleteness feels right, even inevitable. This is not a story that was meant to end cleanly. It is about the seduction of staying, the terrible ease of surrender, and the moment when a man realizes he cannot return from where he has been. Illustrated with Beardsley's signature line drawings, every image sharp as a blade, every curve suggesting what cannot be shown outright.
