The Steps of Life: Further Essays on Happiness

Karl Hilty wrote these essays from the peculiar vantage point of a man who had lived in both the public eye and profound private suffering. A Swiss philosopher and educator, he understood that happiness is not a destination but a discipline and one we rarely practice well. Hilty's core argument cuts through sentimental self-help: we obscure our own contentment through sin, that ancient word he refurbishes with modern urgency to mean the small moral failures we commit daily. The essays trace the architecture of a meaningful life with patience and rigor, examining sorrow not as an obstacle to happiness but as its necessary teacher. Written in 1907, this book predates our current age of optimization and productivity hacks, offering instead a slower, more demanding vision of flourishing rooted in accountability and inward work. For readers weary of shallow positivity and hungry for philosophy that respects the complexity of being human, Hilty remains a vital voice.
