The Spanish Chest

The Pearce sisters have lost their father, and now they must lose the life they knew. Estelle, the elder, refuses to let their small family drift apart. Instead, she proposes something bold: they will open a lodging house in Jersey and welcome guests for the winter season. It is an act of faith dressed as a business venture. Fourteen-year-old Edith is delightfully unprepared for the responsibilities of innkeeping, but she brings something invaluable: optimism, humor, and the kind of innocence that makes hard work feel lighter. Together, the sisters scrub rooms, argue over linens, and wait at the window for travelers who might never come. When guests finally arrive, they bring their own dramas, their own needs, their own surprises. Written in 1917, The Spanish Chest is a quietly devastating portrait of two women building a future from the wreckage of loss. It is cozy without being saccharine, comic without being trivial. For readers who loved Anne of Green Gables or The Penderwicks: a story about the ordinary heroism of keeping a family together.
