The Soul of a Child

A tender, unsentimental portrait of childhood set in the cramped quarters of a Stockholm flat, where a boy named Keith traces the fault lines between love and fear, wonder and want. His mother hovers with anxious devotion, his father commands with stern silence, and his grandmother offers the only unearned indulgence in a household where every emotion seems to carry a price. Through Keith's eyes, we feel the particular ache of a child who senses more than he can name: the Economies of affection, the hierarchies that divide his world, the illness that shadows his mother's days and casts his father deeper into rigid control. Björkman writes with psychological precision about the moments when a child first understands that the adults around him are also struggling, also frightened, also incomplete. This is not a nostalgic reverie but something more honest and harder: an accounting of what it costs to grow up, and what survives anyway.
