The Sloths of Kruvny

It's 1953, the Cold War is casting its shadow, and Vern Fearing has a prescription for existential dread: absurdity. When bumbling space cadets Bradley Broadshoulders and his companion Ugh stumble upon the planet Kruvny, they find an entire civilization of beings so spectacularly lazy they've elevated sloth to an art form. Their only problem? A rival faction called the Sidemen who communicate exclusively through relentless saxophone演奏, and are driving the entire planet to madness. As Brad and the ineffectual High Kruv cook up a plan to address this sonic menace, the universe delivers its cruelest punchline: Earth has been destroyed while they were away. What follows is a uniquely 1950s blend of slapstick, satire, and quiet horror, the comedy of a man who set out to save the galaxy and returned to find he has no home left to report to. Fearing writes with the kind of disposable, grin-inducing wit that defined Golden Age humor SF, proving that sometimes the only response to cosmic indifference is to laugh at it.
