The Seeder

In the far reaches of space, a man known as Pop made a choice that would echo across worlds. He seeded life on a distant planet, watching with pride as his microscopic children multiplied and evolved. But being a father to an entire world wasn't enough. Pop wanted to be worshipped as a god, and when the authorities arrived to regulate his unauthorized creation, the real experiment began. The Seeder is a sharp, unsettling vision of what happens when human ambition meets the mathematics of evolution, and when one man's paternal instincts collide with interstellar law. Williams writes with lean, cold precision, making the vastness of space feel intimate and claustrophobic at once. The story asks uncomfortable questions: Who has the right to seed life? What responsibility comes with creation? And how do you control something that was never meant to be controlled? A compact, thought-provoking piece from the early 60s that anticipates debates about genetic engineering, cosmic colonialism, and the god complex that haunts all explorers.
