The Royal Exchange and the Palace of Industry; Or, The Possible Future of Europe and the World
The Royal Exchange and the Palace of Industry; Or, The Possible Future of Europe and the World
In the wake of the Royal Exchange's devastating fire, Thomas Binney crafted this visionary meditation on commerce, faith, and the destiny of nations. Written amid the ferment of 1850s London, when the Crystal Palace rose to host the Great Exhibition of All Nations, Binney argues that the global marketplace, properly understood, is nothing less than an extension of divine providence. The Earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: this inscription becomes his thesis. Binney sees in the gathering of merchants and manufacturers from every nation a provisional realization of prophetic harmony, a taste of the kingdom yet to come. Yet he offers no mere triumphalism. He grapples seriously with the moral responsibilities of wealth, the sins of empire, and the uneasy relationship between Christian ethics and commercial ambition. For readers interested in Victorian religious thought, the intellectual origins of globalization, or the forgotten optimisms of the 19th century, this treatise stands as a remarkable time capsule of progressive Protestantism at its most ambitious.
