The ancient Zimbabwe ruins rise against the African night, and in their shadow sits Major Carew, a man the Empire has chewed up and spat out. Haunted by memories and personal tragedy, he drifts through the colonial backwater like a ghost, his only companions the echo of a lost civilization and the weight of unspoken grief. When news of King Edward's death reaches the police camp, it marks the end of an era - and Carew, who served the late king with fierce loyalty, feels that end in his very bones. Meanwhile, in gray England, cousins Diana and Meryl Pym receive the same news and see in it a summons. The old world is dying. They will seek their fortunes in Africa, where adventure and purpose presumably still await. What they find instead is a landscape of startling beauty and brutal loneliness, and at its center, a man who may have already given up on hope. Page's 1912 novel captures something rare: the melancholy of Empire, the ache of displacement, and the quiet heroism of simply enduring. It is a love letter to a vanished Africa and a elegy for all the dreams buried there.
