Set in the volcanic spring of 1848, when Hungarian nationalism erupted against the decaying Habsburg Empire, this novel follows two brothers whose loyalties slice down opposite lines. George Botskay prepares to warn Count Latour of an assassination plot, racing through Vienna's barricaded streets where crowds wave the red, white, and green with desperate fervor. His brother Stephen denounces the rebellion as madness, clinging to imperial allegiance while Hungary burns for freedom. The city crackles with revolutionary energy: students haranguing crowds, soldiers uncertain of their officers, and intellectuals debating what nation means when empires have ruled for centuries. These brothers embody the cruelest wound of any revolution: that it is fought not against strangers but against kin. What begins as a warning mission becomes a meditation on what we owe to birthplace, to language, to blood, and whether any crown is worth the price of a brother's contempt.

“He did change history. He did, he did!” Gabil hopped again, twice, lost his footing, and toppled to the floor. He bounded to his feet and did a little jig of sorts. “Ha! It’s fascinating! It’s magnicalicious!” “Please, settle down. That’s not even a word.” “Why not?” Gabil said. “If Thomas can change history, I think I have the right to change a few words.””

“The point is, we were created to love beauty. We love beauty because Elyon loves beauty. We love song because Elyon loves song. We love love because Elyon loves love. And we love to be loved because Elyon loves to be loved. In all these ways we are like Elyon. In one way or another, everything we do is tied to this unfolding story of love between us and Elyon.””

“If a hundred million Americans woke up one morning and learned they had been infected with a virus that would kill them in a matter of weeks, and only one man had the cure and was demanding their cooperation in exchange for that cure . . . This was true power. All they needed was the right weapon. The one virus with its one cure.””

“How can there be love without a true choice? Would you suggest that man be stripped of the capacity to love?” This was the Great Romance. To love at any cost.””
