History - Modern (1750+), Novels, Religion/Spirituality

In the mud and thunder of the Western Front, one man must reconcile the cross with the rifle. Father Anthony Creagh, a Catholic priest, defies his fellow clergy who warn that war belongs to Caesar, not Christ. He secures rare permission from his Bishop to serve as a military chaplain, driven by an unforgiving conviction: the soldiers dying in the trenches need God more than anyone. What follows is neither propaganda nor easy piety. Murdoch renders the chaplain's journey with unflinching honesty: the horror of witnessing young men torn apart, the strange camaraderie of barracks life, and the creeping doubt that perhaps his brothers were right. The title echoes Van Gogh's only sold painting, a vision of laborers in blood-red fields, and the parallel is deliberate. This is a novel about sacrifice that refuses to sanitize it, about faith that survives not because it is simple but because it is necessary. For readers who hunger for WWI fiction that grapples with moral complexity rather than nationalist glory.
