The Preface to Aristotle's Art of Poetry

''The Preface to Aristotle's Art of Poetry'' by André Dacier, first published in 1705, is a critical commentary on Aristotle's theories of poetry, particularly focusing on tragedy. Dacier articulates neo-classical ideas, emphasizing the importance of rules in poetic creation and the moral and instructional roles of poetry in society. He defends Aristotle's principles, arguing that true tragedy moderates human passions and imparts moral lessons, while also tracking the evolution of poetry from its religious origins. This work serves as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern poetic practice, advocating for the preservation of classical standards.
