The Picnic Party: A Story for Little Folks
Josephine has a problem: she expects the world to do things for her. A city girl staying with her country relatives for the summer, she has grown accustomed to asking friends to carry her things, fetch her treats, and wait on her hand and foot. When the children set out for a picnic, Josephine's selfishness reaches its breaking point. She demands to be hauled up a hill in a wagon, expects others to solve every small problem, and treats her companions as servants rather than friends. Fed up, they leave her alone in the woods to find her own way back. Frightened and abandoned, Josephine confronts who she has become and what she has cost her friendships. The story that follows traces her genuine transformation as she learns that kindness is earned through action, not demanded through habit. Written in 1863, this tale pulses with the moral energy of its era - it doesn't patronize its young readers but speaks to them as people capable of growth. The story endures because every child recognizes something of Josephine's struggle: the difference between being loved and being used.
