The Philosophy of Evolution: Together with a Preliminary Essay on the Metaphysical Basis of Science

The Philosophy of Evolution, published in 1874 by Stephen H. Carpenter, examines the relationship between metaphysics and the principles of evolution. Carpenter argues for a rational basis in understanding knowledge and intellectual processes, suggesting that human thought parallels natural phenomena. He posits that knowledge evolves systematically and concludes that the emergence of complex life forms is guided by deliberate, rational laws, reflecting divine intelligence. This work is notable for its early exploration of the philosophical implications of evolution and its intersection with various fields of thought.
