The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest (vol. I, No. 2, July 1895)

This is a battle cry dressed in Victorian prose. The Philistle was a short-lived but fiery periodical of protest, and this July 1895 issue pulses with the irreverent energy of writers who refused to genuflect before the literary establishment. Among its sharpest pieces: 'An Interview with the Devil,' a wickedly satirical portrait of the modern writer's predicament, and 'Where is Literature At?', a bracing critique of contemporary letters as self-conscious, fragmented, and adrift from genuine expression. 'Fashion in Letters and Things' skewers the cyclical absurdity of cultural trends with a humor that still lands. Throughout, the contributors wrestle with the tension between authentic artistic vision and the crushing weight of conformity, musing on what they call 'the laughter of the gods', that sense that culture itself may be mocking its own pretensions. Poetry and prose interweave in this slim but potent artifact of literary dissent, a document from the moment when late Victorians began to question whether modernity had produced anything worth reading at all.
