The Paternoster Ruby

Wealthy financier Felix Page lies murdered in his study, and the legendary Paternoster ruby has vanished from his collection. Detective Swift is called to investigate, arriving at a house where silence speaks louder than confession. Two men were present that night: Alexander Burke, the victim's tight-lipped private secretary, and Royal Maillot, a young lawyer whose nervy temperament seems poorly suited to innocence. Both men had reason to want Page dead, and the ruby made their ambitions fatally combustible. As Swift peels back layers of deception, he discovers Page's world was one of simmering rivalries: a nephew with inheritance hopes, a business adversary named Fluette, and long-buried grudges that the ruby's extraordinary value reignited. The gem becomes a mirror reflecting each character's deepest hunger for wealth, power, or revenge. Walk constructs his mystery with the patient precision of a chess master, letting suspects reveal themselves through small tells and carefully guarded secrets. For readers who cherish Golden Age detective fiction, this novel delivers period atmosphere, moral ambiguity, and a puzzle that rewards careful attention. Those who enjoy the locked-room logic of early mystery writers will find much to admire in how Walk untangles his web of lies.
