The Origin of the Knowledge of Right and Wrong
1889
The Origin of the Knowledge of Right and Wrong, written by Franz Brentano and first published in 1889, is a philosophical lecture that examines the foundations of ethics, law, and natural rights. In this work, Brentano critiques contemporary philosophical views, particularly those of jurist Ihering, and argues for a universally valid moral law grounded in historical and philosophical context. Translated by Cecil Hague, this text is notable for its exploration of moral knowledge and the concept of a 'natural sanction' for law and morality.
