Novels

In a village where class defines worth, a crippled boy named Jacob Dobbin tends a single moss-rose, his only joy in a life of poverty and pain. When James Courtenay, the privileged son of the local squire, carelessly destroys the rose, he sets in motion a tragedy that will haunt him forever. Jacob dies of a broken heart, and James is consumed by guilt, falling into a feverish illness that becomes his own crucible. What follows is a Victorian moral fable at its most unflinching: a story about how the thoughtless cruelty of the powerful can shatter the vulnerable, and whether redemption is possible after such destruction. The novel refuses to soften its message or its ending. Power writes with a stark clarity that modern readers may find startling - this is children's literature that does not shy away from death, from grief, or from the real consequences of.actions. Its power lies in its belief that transformation is possible, but only through genuine suffering and sincere amendment.
