The Northern Light

E. Werner

1891

Translated by D. M., Mrs. Lowrey

An autumn morning in late 19th century Germany. Major Falkenried, a rigid and haunted man, discusses his son Hartmut with his old friend Wallmoden. The Major carries the weight of a failed marriage to Zalika, a woman who left years ago, and has raised their boy according to his own stringent principles of discipline and duty. Now Zalika has returned, seeking to reclaim her place in Hartmut's life, and in doing so forces father and son to confront everything that has been buried. The boy stands at a painful crossroads: loyalty to the father who raised him, or the mother who bore him? As past and present collide, Werner explores the impossible binds of family, the wounds that never quite heal, and the question of whether love can survive the shapes we force it to take. A quiet, psychological drama about what we inherit from those who came before us, and the price we pay for their choices.
