The New Pun Book

This is a time capsule of wordplay from 1906, when puns were a popular form of parlor entertainment and wit was measured by one's facility with double meanings. The New Pun Book gathers jokes, quips, and clever exchanges that once cracked up drawing rooms and pub tables across Edwardian England and America. Here you'll find exchanges between a butcher and his customer, a seafarer with a misadventure, and various characters engaging in the quick-witted verbal sparring that defined era-appropriate comedy. Some of these puns land with pleasing precision; others feel like linguistic fossils, charmingly dated in their references and rhythms. The pleasure here is partly nostalgic, partly archaeological: watching how language was twisted and toyed with before modern stand-up comedy existed, when a good pun could make your reputation at a dinner party. For readers who appreciate vintage humor as cultural artifact, or who enjoy seeing how wit evolves across centuries, this small anthology offers an odd, endearing pleasure. It's not always laugh-out-loud funny by contemporary standards, but it's consistently fascinating in its demonstration of how humans have always loved making words do double duty.
