French Literature, Novels

Translated by W. (William) Blaydes

In 1870s Paris, a man arrives with money to burn and nowhere near enough tact to spend it. Bernard Jansoulet, the "Nabob," has returned from Tunisia with a fortune earned in some combination of trade, speculation, and colonial exploitation, details deliberately blurred, because what matters isn't where the money came from, but what it can't buy: respect. He throws lavish dinners, accumulates art, and attempts to buy his way into Parisian high society, only to find the doors perpetually, infuriatingly, closed. Daudet satirizes the French class system with precision and surprising tenderness, capturing that peculiar moment when French wealth began flowing not from land but from colonies and industry. The Nabob isn't a villain; he's a figure of genuine pathos, a man whose earnest desire to belong is undermined by his own blindness to what he lacks. It's a comedy of manners with a melancholy core: you cannot purchase the one thing you want most, which is to be valued for something other than your money.
