The Monk of Hambleton

A tannery town boils over in this tense 1920s drama of labor and dread. The workers of Hambleton have had enough of Simon Varr's cruelty, his indifference to their bodies, his contempt for their lives, and they've walked off the job in strike. But as picket lines form and tension escalates, a figure emerges from the shadows that no one can explain: a monk, silent and unsettling, his presence like a bad omen drifting through the smoke stacks. Is he a spy for Varr? A ghost? Something worse? As the confrontation between management and men reaches its breaking point, the mysterious stranger seems to be moving through the conflict like a prediction of violence yet to come. Armstrong Livingston weaves industrial unrest with creeping unease in this overlooked novel of class warfare and strange portents, where the machinery of exploitation grinds on and something ancient watches from the margins.
