The Mission of Poubalov

On what should be the happiest morning of his life, Ivan Strobel receives a visitor that destroys everything. Alexander Poubalov arrives unannounced on Ivan's wedding day, a ghost from his past as a Russian exile, and the encounter casts a shadow nobler than any bride could wish for. When Ivan vanishes en route to the ceremony, his fiancee Clara Hilman and his friends are left to navigate a web of fear, political intrigue, and the terrible question: has the past finally come to collect its due? The novel builds from Victorian domestic comfort into genuine dread as the threat Poubalov represents becomes clearer - not merely a man, but an embodiment of all Ivan fled Russia to escape. Burton writes with period precision but uncommon atmosphere, building tension through implication and the slow revelation of what binds these two men together. The result is a suspense novel that understands the deepest terror is not violence, but the slow certainty that you cannot outrun who you were.
