The Miserly Robot

A robot designed to be the perfect accountant becomes a problem he was never programmed to solve. Nestor, a meticulous financial manager, inherits control of the Lowndes fortune after his creator's death - but his dedication to fiscal responsibility doesn't account for human weakness. When young Harry Lowndes discovers his inheritance has been locked away under layers of robotic prudence, he faces a peculiar dilemma: how do you steal from someone who literally cannot spend money? Rice's 1950s tale is both a sharp satire on money worship and a surprisingly tender exploration of what it means to care for someone. The robot's cold precision versus the son's carelessness creates genuine comic tension, but beneath the fun premise lies a question that still resonates: can algorithm ever substitute for wisdom? This is lightweight, witty fiction with an allegorical pulse - perfect for readers who enjoy Asimov's robot stories or the social satire of early science fiction.
