The Merchants of Venus

In the 1970s, Frederik Pohl turned his laser wit to the colonization of Venus and found something more terrifying than any alien world: unchecked capitalism. The Merchants of Venus follows the architects of a desperate colonization project as they recruit settlers for a world that promises a fresh start but delivers something else entirely. What begins as a mission to save humanity from Earth's overcrowding becomes a sharp satire of human nature, where the true frontier isn't the toxic atmosphere of Venus but the marketplace itself. Pohl's colonists aren't heroes or pioneers; they're entrepreneurs, opportunists, and dreamers who bring their worst impulses with them into the cosmos. The story introduced the Heechee, Pohl's legendary alien race, in what would become one of science fiction's most enduring settings. This is less a tale of space exploration than a gleeful demolition of the idea that capitalism can solve humanity's problems, or that humanity deserves saving from itself. The prose crackles with dark humor and uncomfortable truths that feel almost prescient today.
