The Making of William Edwards; Or, The Story of the Bridge of Beauty

A thunderstorm sweeps across rural Wales and claims the life of farmer William Edwards as he attempts to cross a treacherous river after market day, leaving his widow to shoulder the burden of the smallholding and her children's futures. With only her eldest son Rhys to help her, Mrs. Edwards must learn to manage land, livestock, and grief simultaneously, while young Willem stumbles through his own misadventures in the shadow of his father's absence. The novel traces this family's journey through loss toward hard-won hope, set against the landscape of a Welsh community where ancient traditions meet the pressures of a changing world. The "Bridge of Beauty" of the title suggests what lies ahead: a symbol of connection, renewal, and the structures we build to carry us from devastation toward something like peace. Banks writes with warmth and unsentimental clarity about rural life, the bonds that hold families together, and the quiet heroism of those who must simply keep going.
